About Us

Benjamin Portwood

Benjamin Portwood is a gardener and Permaculture designer. He believes that since food comes from plants, bushes and trees, and since there are plants, bushes, and trees growing outside of his house, it only makes sense that those one's outside be the one's that he likes to eat. That way he spends less money at the grocery store and is helping to save the world at the same time. He once spent 3 days straight under the shade of a fig tree, eating then napping then eating then napping, and was amazed the abundance and generosity of nature. Now it seems crazy to him to pay 5$ for 20 dried figs.

Ben was trained at the Instituto de Permacultura Montsant in Catalunya, Spain where he was a resident intern for two years. Since moving to North Carolina, he worked as Garden Coordinator at the Ashevillage Institute, taught the Gardening-After-School-enrichment program at Vance Elementary School, and worked to establish gardens and forest gardens around Asheville.
